Wang Yi Attends Lanting Forum on China and the UN: Cooperation in 50 Years and Beyond and Delivers Keynote Speech

2021/06/25

On June 25, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the Lanting Forum on China and the UN: Cooperation in 50 Years and Beyond, which was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and delivered a keynote speech.

Wang Yi said, the founding of the United Nations (UN) was a milestone in humanity's pursuit of peace and development. China was the first country to put its signature on the UN Charter. On October 25, 1971, the UN General Assembly at its 26th Session adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority. It decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations. It was a victory for New China's diplomacy, a victory for justice and fairness in the world, and a victory for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. The force for world peace and development was stronger than ever before.

Wang Yi said that Chairman Mao Zedong once said, it was our fellow developing countries that "carried" the People's Republic of China into the United Nations. The word "carry" aptly captures the profound friendship between China and other developing countries. In the five decades since, China has acted in the same spirit by firmly upholding the legitimate rights and interests of fellow developing countries and speaking up for the developing world. Past, present and in the future, China always stands together with developing countries. China's vote in the United Nations is always for the well-being of developing countries.

Wang Yi stressed that as the world's largest developing country and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China always honors the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and vigorously promotes the spirit and approach of multilateralism. It has made tireless efforts and important contributions to fulfilling the aspirations of the UN, and to a stronger UN and the development and progress of mankind.

China has set a good example in upholding the international order. China put forth and has faithfully observed the five principles of peaceful co-existence, has joined almost all universal inter-governmental organizations, firmly safeguarded the UN-centered international system, upheld the international order underpinned by international law, bolstered the central role of the United Nations in international affairs and shared its wisdom and solution for world peace and development. President Xi Jinping has proposed building a community with a shared future for mankind. The initiative is the banner of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era. China will continue to take an active part in the reform and improvement of the global governance system under this banner.

China has honored its responsibilities for upholding world peace. China has become the largest contributor of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the Security Council. China is also the second largest funding contributor to the UN and UN peacekeeping operations. Over the past 50 years, China has taken the side of fairness, upholding sovereign equality and opposing interference in other countries' internal affairs, power politics and hegemonism. China has taken the side of justice, adhering to equity and impartiality and opposing geopolitical rivalry and exclusive blocs. China has taken the side of peace, standing for political settlement and opposing the use of force and unilateral sanctions. China has been actively exploring for solutions to hotspot issues in line with the spirit of the UN Charter.

China has worked relentlessly to promote common development. China was among the first to reach the UN Millennium Development Goals. China has met 10 years in advance the poverty eradication target set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. China's contribution to global growth remained the highest for 15 years running. China has worked to foster greater synergy between its own development and that of the world. The Belt and Road Initiative has received support from 140 countries and 32 international organizations. The China International Import Expo has been held for three consecutive years. China also takes an active part in South-South cooperation. China has provided around RMB 400 billion yuan of development assistance to 166 countries and international organizations. It is China's contribution of intellectual and material resources to global efforts against poverty.

China has made active contribution to addressing global challenges. On climate change, China has worked actively for the adoption of the Paris Agreement, proposed its target of CO2 emissions peak and carbon neutrality, and put forth more steps to scale up China's nationally determined contributions, testifying to China's sense of mission and responsibility. In the face of Asian financial crisis and international financial crisis, China's responsible macroeconomic policies were an important contribution to the economic recovery of surrounding countries and the world at large. In the global fight against COVID-19, China has launched as promptly as possible an emergency humanitarian operation, and has provided medical supplies to over 150 countries and 13 international organizations. China has announced that Chinese vaccines will be made a global public good, sending China's strong message of solidarity to the world.

Wang Yi pointed out that the international landscape is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century. The international system with the UN at its core is the only system jointly built by all. The basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter is the only set of norms universally endorsed by all. Building international consensus on the UN platform to meet global challenges together is the biggest common ground of all countries. It is also the right choice consistent with the trend of the times. China is ready to work with all countries to resolve differences through dialogue and negotiation to jointly build a world of lasting peace, and uphold the new vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security to jointly build a world of universal security. China is ready to work with all countries to enhance solidarity and win-win cooperation to jointly build a world of shared prosperity, treat each other with respect and as equals to jointly build an open and inclusive world, and uphold the people-centered approach and green development to jointly build a clean and beautiful world. China is ready to work with all countries to defend the common values of humanity, namely peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom, and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Wang Yi said at this new historical starting point, China will continue to make all-out efforts in participating in UN affairs, safeguard the status of the UN, and promote the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. We will uphold the banner of true multilateralism, and, together with the rest of the world, forge ahead for greater peace and development of mankind!

After finishing his speech, Wang Yi, together with Ambassador Li Daoyu, who was awarded the national honorary title of "Outstanding Contributor to Diplomatic Work", Ambassador Shi Yanhua, who witnessed in person the historic moment of China's return to the United Nations, Algerian Ambassador to China Alhassan Bukhalifa, and Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations in China Carlos Watson and others, jointly issued the theme logo of "the 50th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Lawful Seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations".
