|Wang Yi Speaks by Phone with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu|
On 21 April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took a phone call from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
Noting the important agreement reached between President Xi Jinping and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during their recent phone call to step up cooperation on COVID-19 response and advance bilateral relations, Wang said that China and Turkey should follow through on the two Presidents' agreement and strengthen political trust, especially mutual understanding and support on issues bearing on each other's core interests and major concerns. As the two countries mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year, the two sides need to work together for another 50 years of mutual trust and support in their strategic relationship of cooperation.
Wang said that as COVID-19 continues to spread in many countries, Turkey is also facing a grave challenge. He extended sympathies to the Turkish people and confidence that Turkey will triumph over the virus under the leadership of President Erdoğan. China follows a longstanding policy of friendship toward Turkey, and values the friendship between the two peoples. China has provided several batches of medical supplies to Turkey and facilitated on a priority basis Turkey's procurement of urgently needed medical supplies, and will continue to support and help Turkey if needed. Given the enormous potential of mutually beneficial cooperation, it is important that the two sides step up coordination and cooperation to minimize the impact of the virus.
Wang noted that more than 180 countries including Turkey have extended understanding and support to China since the start of COVID-19. In return, China is providing badly needed medical supplies to more than 100 countries in need. In the battle against the virus, what is needed the most is working together rather than undercutting each other's efforts, and what matters the most is trust rather than suspicion. Wang expressed confidence that the friendship between China and Turkey will emerge even stronger from this test.
Çavuşoğlu said that the two Presidents had a fruitful discussion on the phone and reached extensive agreement on jointly fighting the virus and deepening bilateral ties. It is important for the two sides to follow up on the two Presidents' agreement, accommodate each other's concerns, strengthen practical cooperation in economic, trade, financial and other fields, and make good preparations for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties. In addition to defeating the virus at home, China has done its utmost to help Turkey and other countries, and become the biggest contributor of medical supplies to the rest of the world. Turkey highly commends China's contribution. In the face of this severe disease, the international community should step up solidarity and cooperation rather than otherwise.
