Wang Yi Speaks by Phone with Mauritanian Foreign Minister Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed

On 10 April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took a phone call from Foreign Minister Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania.

Wang underscored that when China was caught in a tough battle against the COVID-19 outbreak, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani sent a message of solidarity to President Xi Jinping at the first available opportunity, which fully reflects the profound tradition of friendship between China and Mauritania. He noted that the global spread of the virus poses a great threat to the health and safety of people of all countries and a grave challenge to Mauritania as well. China will firmly support Mauritania in fighting and ultimately defeating the virus. About two weeks ago, two China-aided projects in Mauritania, namely the renovation of China-Mauritania Friendship Hospital and the construction of the infectious and tropical diseases treatment center of Nouakchott National Hospital, passed quality check and were delivered ahead of schedule. A videoconference has been held for health experts of the two countries to share epidemic control experience. China will continue to do its best to support and help Mauritania, including by encouraging Chinese companies and social groups to donate supplies and by facilitating Mauritania's purchase of medical supplies from China. Wang expressed his confidence that President Ghazouani will lead his people to an early victory against the outbreak.

Noting the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Wang pointed out that the epidemic is only temporary while the friendship and cooperation between the two countries will endure and be further cemented and deepened through the joint fight against the disease.

Ahmed commended China for its major achievements in battling the outbreak and thanked China for supporting and assisting the outbreak response of Mauritania and many other countries. Noting the epidemic situation in his country and its inadequate response due to a weak national health system, he requested for continued, strong support from Chinese friends. He recognized the sound development of bilateral relations over the past 55 years, and affirmed Mauritania's commitment to support China in safeguarding national unity and interests and to always stand with China.
