State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Speaks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba Dmytro on the Phone

2020/04/01

On 1 April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took a phone call from Foreign Minister Kuleba Dmytro of Ukraine.

Wang noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent a letter to President Xi Jinping to express his sympathies at the most trying time of China’s outbreak response. Support was also extended to the people in China through various ways from a cross-section of the Ukrainian society. Now that Ukraine is battling the COVID-19 outbreak, China will do its best to provide medical supplies and share control and treatment experience with Ukraine without any reservation.

Wang underscored that as each other’s strategic partners, China is ready to deepen Belt and Road cooperation with Ukraine to unlock cooperation potential and translate it into tangible results. Some 4,000 Chinese nationals work, study or live in Ukraine. China hopes and believes that Ukraine will do what is needed to look after them and ensure their health and safety.

Wang stressed that the outbreak is a global challenge and requires a collective response. China, a country with a great sense of responsibility, has acted in an open and transparent way from day one by sharing information and engaging in international cooperation with other countries. China has provided essential medical supplies to over 100 countries in need and contributed its share to safeguarding global public health, for we believe that humanity is a community with a shared future. Wang cautioned that no attempt to slander China’s response efforts is based on facts and none will succeed.

Minister Kuleba said that China has set a stellar example of effectively combating the outbreak. With the virus sweeping across the globe, countries can only overcome the difficulties through united efforts. Some politicians have denigrated China to serve their own agenda. Their remarks are utterly groundless.

Minister Kuleba expressed sincere thanks to China for the assistance of medical supplies and desire to have more experience sharing and cooperation with China to jointly combat the outbreak. The Ukrainian government highly values its relations with China and hopes to further advance the strategic partnership between the two countries. He reaffirmed that Ukraine will do everything it can to protect the health and safety of Chinese citizens in the country.
