Wang Yi: China Will Help Spain Fight the Outbreak

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya on the phone on 15 March.

Wang said that China has achieved significant progress in the fight against the epidemic, and is expected to secure a final victory. Nonetheless, disease respects no borders and the outbreak is occurring in various places with multiple sources. As the number of cases in Spain increases rapidly, China wishes to once again express its sympathy to the Spanish people. From the very beginning, China has been committed to international cooperation against the outbreak in a spirit of openness and transparency, and has worked to protect the health and safety of the Chinese people as well as the people of the rest of the world. While solidifying the progress at home, China is ready to provide necessary help in light of the needs of other countries. Mankind belongs to a community with a shared future, and fighting the epidemic is the shared responsibility of all countries. As long as one country is still under the threat of the disease, all countries must stay together and fight to the end.

González highly commended China's achievements in fighting COVID-19 and expressed, on behalf of the Spanish government, appreciation for China's support and sympathy for Spain's control efforts. The Spanish government is taking strong measures to contain the spread of the disease, but it faces the shortage of medical supplies and other challenges. It is hoped that China would provide Spain with medical supplies, and Spain wishes to learn experience from China through video conferences between their medical experts. Spain is opposed to the practice of stigmatization, and highly appreciates the contribution of the Chinese community in Spain to its national development and epidemic control. Spain will provide sufficient medical and social services to ensure their health and safety.

Wang noted the long-term friendship and enduring mutual understanding and support between China and Spain. China will not forget the valuable understanding and support from Spain in the fight against the epidemic. China has decided to provide Spain with a batch of emergency medical supplies in accordance with its needs, and to open up commercial channels for Spain to import urgently needed personal protective gears and medical equipment. Friendship cities and businesses will be encouraged to offer help. China will step up experience sharing, coordinate on the medical video conferences between the two countries' experts, and consider sending a medical expert team at an appropriate time.

Wang expressed confidence that the traditional friendship between the Chinese and Spanish people will be deepened, and practical cooperation in various areas strengthened through the joint fight against the epidemic. The Chinese side will continue to do everything possible to protect the health and safety of the Spanish people in China, and hopes that the Spanish government will place high importance on the health and safety of all Chinese nationals in Spain, and provide them with necessary medical support. China wishes Spain an early victory against the epidemic with society-wide efforts.
