Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos


On the evening of 20 February, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Lao Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi thanked Laos for making arrangements against all odds for the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in such a short time. Wang Yi noted that fighting the epidemic is the top priority of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government. Under the personal guidance of President Xi Jinping, we have fully leveraged the strength of our socialist system to control the outbreak and to launch a people's battle nationwide against the epidemic. At the two Foreign Ministers' Meetings, China's prevention and control measures were fully recognized and the foreign ministers have expressed their support for and confidence in China in triumphing over the epidemic. Foreign ministers also agreed to work closely and support each other to jointly overcome difficulties with strong confidence. It demonstrates the fine tradition of China and Laos as well as China and ASEAN of standing with each other to rise to challenges at critical moments.

Wang Yi pointed out that China-Laos relations have entered the new era of building a community of shared future. While prioritizing the implementation of the important consensus reached by leaders of the two countries and the upcoming 60th anniversary of our diplomatic relations next year, China stands ready to enhance exchanges and cooperation in all fields with Laos and write a new chapter in the development of our traditional friendship. China will maintain high-level interactions with Laos, further share experience on governance, facilitate the construction of the China-Laos Railway and the China-Laos Economic Corridor, implement programs that improve people's livelihood and deliver to the people tangible benefits through our cooperation. Accelerating the action plan of building a community of shared future through our joint efforts will boost the economic and social development of Laos, enhance our mutual trust and solidarity and safeguard our common interests more effectively on the global stage.

Saleumxay Kommasith said Laos highly applauds the efforts China has made in fighting COVID-19 and will stand firmly with the Chinese people. He believes that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government, the Chinese people will win this battle. Saleumxay Kommasith noted that Laos attaches great importance to the consensus on building a China-Laos community of shared future reached by leaders of the two parties and countries and has convened a high-level meeting in recent days specifically for the implementation of its action plan. Laos stands ready to work with China and will give priority to the meticulous implementation of the action plan, expand pragmatic cooperation in all spheres, ensure the completion of the China-Laos Railway as planned and facilitate the developmment of the China-Laos Economic Corridor. Laos thanks China for the consistent and precious support it has offered to help promote Lao's economic and social development. Laos will firmly support China's legitimate stances on issues concerning China's core interests and work with China to celebrate the China-Laos Friendship Year next year and press forward for more achievements in our bilateral relations.
