State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi


On February 19, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi said that by supporting the ASEAN-China Special Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Mr. Secretary-General demonstrates the friendship with China that he himself and the ASEAN Secretariat hold dear to and the firm support for China in fighting the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Wang Yi thanked the Secretariat for organizing ASEAN-China medical experts video meeting. He believes that the good results of the meeting next day will send a positive signal that ASEAN countries stand with China in fighting the epidemic and will enhance China's relationship with ASEAN. Wang Yi also said that public health is an cross-border issue where China stands ready to expand cooperation with ASEAN to enrich our relationship. China attaches great importance to the significant role of the Secretariat and expects it to continue to lead and coordinate ASEAN in following a China-friendly policy. It is also hoped that the Secretariat will play an active role in accomplishing the signing of the RCEP on time and developing a "blue economic partnership".

Dato Lim Jock Hoi said that China is an important strategic partner with ASEAN. It highly appreciates China's consistent support for ASEAN integration and for ASEAN centrality in regional affairs. Dato Lim Jock Hoi also thanked China on behalf of ASEAN countries for the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship. ASEAN stands with China in fighting the epidemic and believes that through joint responses to the outbreak, ASEAN-China relationship will be stronger, more resilient and full of positive energy. ASEAN stands ready to strengthen our solidarity and cooperation, especially health and security cooperation under the framework of ASEAN Plus China (10+1) and ASEAN Plus China, Japan and South Korea (10+3). Dato Lim Jock Hoi believes that the Special Foreign Ministers' Meeting next day will be a success and it will send a strong message to the world. He also noted that next year would be the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations. The ASEAN Secretariat will work to build more synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 and take an active part in promoting ASEAN-China relationship.
